This Knowledge Base Article provides detailed instructions for users on how to claim their account. Claiming an account is the process through which users verify their identity, activate their account, and gain access to essential services and systems. This guide will help users understand the steps needed to claim their User ID account, including handling EMPLID and claim number details. The document will be periodically updated to reflect any changes in the account claiming process, security protocols, or system updates.
Claiming Account
This document is intended for students, faculty, staff, and other users of the North Dakota University System who need to claim their accounts to access university resources and services.
When a user contacts IT support for account access, whether as a first-time user or a returning user, refer to the chart below to determine the appropriate steps for verification and account setup.

If a student does not recall their EMPLID, it’s possible they took a dual credit course in high school or another course they don’t remember. In this case:

Claiming Account/Account Activation
1. Go to the Helpdesk Website. (helpdesk.ndus.edu)
2. Click “Claim my Account.”
3. The user will be redirected to a page containing a welcome video from Brent Sanford, Chancellor of the North Dakota University System. After watching the video, scroll down and click the link that says "Claim your NDUS account" to continue the setup process.
4. Enter the required information:
- SIS students: Enter your EMPLID number and date of birth (MM/DD/YYYY), ensuring that you include leading zeros if necessary.

Non-SIS students: Enter your Claim ID and Claim Number. (Claim ID = EMPLID and Claim Number = birthdate).
- T.Accounts: Some users may have temporary accounts (t.accounts) that are often used for test users, training, or users who haven’t fully completed onboarding. These accounts may not have standard verification details like SSN or birthdate. (EMPLID ID is led by Campus Abbreviation and Birthdate = Issued Claim Number) (Example: SCS12345678= NDSCS)
Note: New students receive one email containing their EMPLID. T.Students receive two separate emails, one with their EMPLID (which includes the campus prefix) and another with their Claim ID. Agents should not provide Claim IDs over the phone; however, they may resend the Claim ID to the email address listed in SSPR if needed. (Claim ID is in SSPR where the birthdate would normally be.)
5. Verify the Date of Birth format:
- Ensure the caller enters their date of birth exactly as displayed.
If the caller has been verified in Campus Connection, their date of birth appears incorrectly; follow the Birthdate Correction process.
6. Click "I Agree."
7. View Username Confirmation:
- The confirmation screen should display the assigned username.
- Click "Continue."
8. Set Up Password:
- Create and confirm a new password.
- A password change confirmation should appear—click "Continue."
9. Set Up Your Alternate Email Address:
- The system will display your User ID for you to enter.
- This field is required. If you do not have an alternate email account, please enter no@gmail.com
10. Review and Confirm Your Information:
- Verify the accuracy of your User ID and Alternate Email Address.
- Confirm that the information is correct before proceeding.
11. Access the Main Menu:
- Once confirmed, the caller will be directed to the Main Menu.
- From here, they can change their password or update their personal email address as needed.
Note: After completing the final step on the menu page, the message "Please wait" will appear. The user must wait for this process to finish to ensure the account setup is successfully completed.
Process for Claiming NDUS Global Identifier/Account (For Non-SIS Users)
If the user cannot complete the self-service process on the guest page (e.g., no SSN or international status), follow these steps to help the user claim their NDUS Global Identifier/Account:
1. Access the NDUS Account Claim Page:
a. Have the user click on their NDUS Account Activation link.
b. Select the first box labeled "Claim an NDUS account."
2. Complete the Verification Quiz:
a. You will be required to answer a short quiz to verify your identity.
3. Enter Required Information:
a. Provide your Date of Birth.
b. Enter your EMP ID, which is: XXXXX.
4. Set Up Your Password:
a. Create a password for your NDUS account.
b. Ensure that you securely save your password and NDUS Global Dotted Identifier, as these credentials will be required for system login.
Following these steps will successfully activate your NDUS Global Identifier/Account.
Non-SIS student Claim Account Email Not Received
T.Account users receive two separate emails, one with their EMPLID (which includes the campus prefix) and another with their Claim ID. Agents should not provide Claim IDs over the phone; however, these emails can be manually resent to the personal email address on file upon request.
To ensure successful delivery, attempt to send these emails from your Zendesk while on the phone with the user. This helps avoid issues with spam filters or blocks and allows the agent to verify whether the user received each email.
Note: (The Claim ID to be sent is in SSPR where the birthdate would normally be.)First email their personal email address thats listed within SSPR ( Email address in peoplesoft a secreto word/ ) Once they recit the secret word send the template listed below including their EMPL ID and claim # listed within SSPSR .

As stated in a previous email, this email contains your claim number, which should be used in place of your birthdate for the account activation process.

Your next step is to activate or "claim" your NDUS User ID account. To complete this, you will need both your EMPLID and claim number.
To proceed:
- Go to HTTPS://HelpDesk.NDUS.edu
- Locate the NDUS Account section
- Select Claim Account
